Come and See

Welcome to the ancient faith. A guide for your first visit to St. Michael’s.

Introduction

The Original Christian Church

If you are looking for the Church of the New Testament—the Church founded by the Apostles and preserved through history—you have found it. The Orthodox Church is not a denomination; it is the continuation of the ancient Christian faith.

At St. Michael, you will find a community striving to live the Gospel in Southeast Texas. Whether you are a seeker, a skeptic, or just curious, our doors are open to you.

What to Expect on Sunday Morning

It Involves the Senses

Orthodox worship encompasses the whole person. You will see icons, smell incense, hear chanting, and see people making the sign of the cross. It is beautiful, ancient, and solemn.

We Stand to Pray

In the Orthodox tradition, standing is the posture of reverence. You will see many people standing for most of the service. However, if you need to sit, please do! We have pews for your comfort.

No Pressure

No one will make you stand up and introduce yourself. We want you to experience the Liturgy at your own pace. Feel free to participate as much or as little as you are comfortable with.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Eucharist (Communion) is reserved for practicing Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves through prayer and fasting. However, everyone is invited to receive the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the service.

Yes. The vast majority of our Liturgy is celebrated in English so that all may understand and participate in the prayers.

Bring them! Children are a vital part of our church family. We are used to the wiggles and whispers of little ones. If you need a moment, there is a cry room/nursery available, but your children are welcome in the nave.

We tend to dress respectfully for God’s house—typically 'business casual' or Sunday best. But the most important thing is that you are here.

What We Believe

We hold fast to the Nicene Creed, the confession of faith used by Christians for over 1,600 years. We believe in the Holy Trinity, the Incarnation of Christ, and the transformational power of the Holy Spirit. We do not innovate; we preserve.
